Leyla McCalla (multi-instrumentiste bilingue et ancienne membre du groupe afroaméricain Carolina Chocolate Drops) trouve son inspiration dans son passé et son présent. Qu'il s'agisse de son héritage haïtien ou de sa ville d'adoption, la Nouvelle-Orléans, elle a réussi à produire un son distinctif qui reflète l'union de ses racines et de son expérience. Leyla McCalla a produit une oeuvre multidisciplinaire de musique, de danse et de théâtre, Breaking the Thermometer, qui suit son parcours personnel alors qu'elle découvre l'histoire de Radio Haïti, la première station de radio de l'ïle à diffuser des informations en créole haïtien. Par cette juxtaposition de voix (personnelles et politiques, anecdotiques et journalistiques), McCalla exprime l'esprit durable des pauvres marginalisés d'Haïti face à plusieurs siècles d'oppression politique. Il lui a fallu écouter d'innombrables enregistrements d'archives d'interviews réalisées par les journalistes de Radio Haïti.
